Course Description

Introduction to Health and Physical Education will emphasize that personal health and wellness is valuable in life, and that it’s consistent study and practice will enable individuals to make choices that will positively impact their health and well-being. A combination of physical activities, fitness opportunities, and health topics and concerns will be taught and discussed. This course is highly recommended for students in 9th and 10th grade, and meets 10 of the 15 credits required for graduation. This course must be taken prior to enrolling in any other Physical Education courses, with the exception of Strength Enhancement. At the end of this course, you will: * Have gained knowledge of a variety of physical activities, including team sports and leisure/lifetime activities (PE.HS.1.1). *Be able to individually take part in a variety of physical/lifetime activities, allowing you to reach the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity that we should meet daily (PE.HS.1.2). *Have a clear understanding of the five components of physical fitness and the types of physical activities/exercises that can be used to work on each of the components (PE.HS.1.2). *Be able to seek out and participate in physical activities that meet the need for self-expression and enjoyment while exhibiting responsible personal and social behavior (PE.HS.1.3). *Have analyzed the top health concerns within your community and will be knowledgeable and aware of how to make healthy lifestyle choices in regards to those topics and concerns as well as general areas of health (PE.HS.1.4).
