WOOD FABRICATION - HSIT130
Grade Level: 9,10,11,12 ; Course Credit: 10 ; Prerequisite: Intro to Skilled and Technical Sciences or prior high school skilled and technical courses or 8th grade production tech @ Horizon or 8th grade IT @ Sunrise
This course is an introduction into cabinet and furniture construction. This course will cover safety and proper operational procedures of hand and power tools. Basic units will be taught on furniture, dimensions, and other aspects that accompany the cabinetmaking process . The students will construct and build a nightstand which is required to be completed in the semester. The cost of the nightstand is $80. During the class, there will be lecture sessions where note taking and good study skills are essential to pass the class.
CONSTRUCTION TECH A - HSIT140
Grade Level: 11,12 ; Course Credit 10 ; Dual Credit Eligible through CCC; Prerequisite: Juniors: Wood Fab and Advanced Woods -- Seniors: Wood Fabrication
This course is designed to introduce students to the basic skills, processes & materials necessary for construction of single family dwellings. The main project during the course will be the construction of a three bedroom house; however, this class is not designed to prepare journeyman level tradesman, rather, it is designed to introduce the various facets of home construction whereby the student can develop fundamental skills of "entry level" and proceed into the vocational technical schools or apprenticeship programs. It is intended for the serious student who will be willing to work and desires to learn about the building trades. During the year approximately 95% of the course will be "on the job" training with 5% devoted to classroom activities, lectures, etc. **Students are expected to provide their own transportation to and from the construction site. This is a year long course, please sign up for both HSIT140 AND HSIT145.
