AP Statistics

Canvas Classroom

AP Statistics is the high school equivalent of a one-semester, introductory non-calculus-based college statistics course. In this course, students are introduced to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data.  There are four themes evident in the content skills, and assessment in the AP statistics course: exploring data, sampling and experimentation, probability and simulation, and statistical inference. Students use technology, investigations, problem solving, and writing as they build conceptual understanding.

Course Outline:

1st Term - Exploring Data, Sampling and

Experimentation, Probability and Simulation

2nd Term - Statistical Inference

Unit 1 - Exploring One-Variable Data

Unit 2 - Exploring Two-Variable Data

Unit 3 - Collecting Data

Unit 4 - Probability, Random Variables, and Probability Distributions

Unit 5 - Sampling Distributions

Unit 6 - Inference for Categorical Data: Proportions

Unit 7 - Inference for Quantitative Data: Means

Unit 8 - Inference for Categorical Data: Chi-Square

Unit 9 - Inference for Quantitative Data: Slopes

At the end of each unit a personal progress check will be assigned. Each PPC will be completed online and include 2 or more multiple choice sections as well as 2-3 free response questions.

We will end term 1 with a cumulative midterm that covers Data, Probability and Distributions. The midterm is worth 20% of your term 1 overall grade.

We will end term 2 with a cumulative final. The final will be a full-length AP Statistics exam. The final is worth 20% of your term 2 overall grade.

In AP Statistics, students are expected to learn

  • Skills
    • To produce convincing oral and written statistical arguments, using appropriate terminology, in a variety of applied settings.
    • When and how to use technology to aid them in solving statistical problems
  • Knowledge
    • Essential techniques for producing data (surveys, experiments, observational studies), analyzing data (graphical & numerical summaries), modeling data (probability, random variables, sampling distributions), and drawing conclusions from data (inference procedures – confidence intervals and significance tests)
  • Habits of mind
    • To become critical consumers of published statistical results by heightening their awareness of ways in which statistics can be improperly used to mislead, confuse, or distort the truth.

  • Sharpened or Mechanical Pencils (any homework, quizzes or tests done in pen will not be accepted)
  • Red Pens for Checking & Note-Taking (Other pens in different colors are optional but encouraged)
  • Highlighter
  • A 2” 3-ring binder
  • Loose leaf lined paper or graph paper
  • Your Chromebook (charged)
  • Recommended: Graphing Calculator (TI-83, TI-84 or TI-Nspire) (can be checked out if needed)

20% Daily Work: Daily work grades will be taken frequently. These may include assignments that are to be completed in class, on your own, as homework, etc. (5-20 points each)

60% Tests & Quizzes: All tests will be announced and will include a multiple choice and a Free Response portion. Tests will typically be given at the end of each unit.  (Unit Tests = 100 points each) Quizzes may be given throughout after individual sections within a unit. (Quizzes = 15 points)

20% Midterm/Final: At the end of Term 3 a cumulative midterm will be given that could include any concepts that have been covered up to that point (Chapter 1-2, 4-7). At the end of the semester, a cumulative final will be given. The final will be a full-length AP Statistics exam and scored accordingly.

No redos permitted on any tests. Study the first time and learn from your mistakes.

If you are unhappy with your grade…

  • … complete any missing work from the current unit
  • … watch videos about the concepts (Khan Academy, youtube, or via the eBook) and do additional practice
  • … review your notes frequently
  • … schedule a time to meet with me to review content after school and come prepared with questions. I will not be able to help you without your input on where you are struggling.
  • ...be proactive about your grade (in other words, study and get help BEFORE a test/quiz)
  • … DO NOT request an extra credit assignment.
