KHS Senior Drew Welch Recognized by Governor for Perfect ACT Score

KHS Senior Drew Welch Recognized by Governor for Perfect ACT Score

Drew Welch, a standout senior at Kearney High School, was honored this week by Governor Jim Pillen and the Nebraska Department of Education for achieving a perfect score of 36 on the ACT college entrance exam—a distinction earned by less than one-tenth of one percent of test takers nationwide.

Welch was among 33 students from Nebraska’s graduating class of 2025 recognized at a special ceremony in the State Capitol Rotunda. Governor Pillen and Education Commissioner Dr. Brian Maher praised the students for their academic excellence and years of dedication.

“The ACT ceremony represents the culmination of years and years of study,” Governor Pillen said. “The students who are here today should feel a great deal of pride in this accomplishment.”

Commissioner Maher echoed that sentiment, noting that such a score is a reflection not only of student effort but also the support of educators and families. “Earning a top score on the ACT is an extraordinary achievement. This success also speaks volumes about the invaluable contributions of parents and educators who have invested in and supported these students.”

Welch's achievement also makes him eligible for the Nebraska Presidential Scholars Program, a new initiative by the University of Nebraska that covers full tuition, housing, fees, books, and includes a $5,000 annual stipend for Nebraska students who earn a 36 on the ACT.

Drew Welch’s accomplishment places him in elite company and brings pride to Kearney High School and the broader Kearney Public Schools community. Congratulations, Drew, on this outstanding academic milestone!
