Communication Arts
INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS
Communication Arts is designed to give students the skills necessary for effective communication in personal, academic, and vocational/professional contexts. Students will be immersed in a project-based learning environment as they construct and present a variety of communication artifacts. Specific concepts to be introduced or strengthened include basic communication theories, sound research techniques, interview techniques, message organization, oral communication writing and delivery principles, group discussion and conflict resolution, critical listening, audience analysis, and techniques of argumentation.
Creating
Students will construct various communication artifacts including: Survivor Activity Journal, Professional Resumé, Academic Curriculum Vitae, Warning Sign Logo and Justification Essay, Demonstration Speech, and Current Events Speech.
Presenting
Students will present, both electronically and in person, a variety of finalized communication artifacts including: Resumé, Curriculum Vitae, Demonstration Speech, and Current Events Speech.
Responding
Students will employ rubric-based peer- and self-evaluations in preparation for final presentation of all unit artifacts.
Connecting
Students will use prior knowledge and experience to select topics of study for all student-directed projects.
Presentation Guidelines
All presentations must be classroom appropriate. This means you may NOT:
- Bring drugs or alcohol, weapons, combustibles, or anything else that violates school policy, under the pretense that “it’s for a speech”.
- Conduct any dangerous demonstrations.
- Use any vulgar, profane, or sexually explicit language or visual aids.
- No discriminatory or offensive language will be tolerated: Be supportive classmates to one another.
- No commenting while classmates are presenting: Be respectful toward one another.
STUDENT PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this course, you will:
1. Understand the various types of communication including: intrapersonal and interpersonal: non-verbal, verbal, small group and large group
2. Understand the role of the audience and know how to be an excellent audience member
