The Arts at KHS

At KPS, we believe that the arts are an essential piece of education and of humanity.  Students in the visual and performing arts develop a strong sense of self-confidence, achievement, imagination, cooperation, creative thinking, problem-solving, and concentration.  As educators, we know that students who participate in the arts have higher academic success as demonstrated by their grade point averages and scores on the ACT/SAT exams.  As humans, we know that these same students have a higher appreciation for the arts and culture. In other words, the students who have the experience of creating art with their own hands, and of bringing theater and music to life on our stages through performance, have taken an important step for their future success

At KHS, our students win state and national art awards.  There is a wide variety of classes and clubs which include theater, art, and music.  The high school performs one play and one musical each year.  There are a variety of musical concerts and competitions in vocal music, orchestra, and band.  KHS also hosts an annual art show at the Museum of Nebraska Art.

A Message from our AD

HELLO BEARCAT NATION and visiting teams/patrons!  It is my pleasure to welcome you to Kearney High School where we strive for Excellence in and outside the classroom.  KHS is a Class A school, a member of the Nebraska School Activities Association, and a second-year member of the Heartland Athletic Conference.  Before the 2018-2019 school year, Kearney High School had been a member of the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference since 1984.

The Activities Department at Kearney High School strives to create valuable and positive experiences for all students as they learn to compete with character and confidence.  The experiences they enjoy throughout the school year are evident, but the lifelong lessons they learn from participating cannot be underestimated or measured to show the positive impact on an individual level.

Kearney High School has had a tremendous amount of success competing at the state level in all athletics with 43 State Championships and 59 Runner-Up Teams.  The success that the Bearcats have experienced is second to none at the state level.  The success does not stop with our athletic programs as our activities at KHS are continuously competing or top 5 finishes at NSAA championships or receiving high-performance marks where championships are not attainable.   Additionally, Kearney High School is only one of five Class A Schools to finish in the Top 10 of the All-School Activities Division of the NSAA’s Cup Competition 12 of the past 14 years it has been conducted.  In recent years, during the 2018-2019 school year, the Bearcats were 2nd in Boys Cup scoring, 10th in Girls and 7th Combined (Girls and Boys) in the Cup Standings.  These staggering statistics are trademarks of the caliber of athletes, activity participants, sponsors and coaches we have in Bearcat Nation.

Kearney High School has a rich history of stellar programming within all areas of our Fine and Performing Arts Department.  In addition to a dedicated staff and leadership team, each area of this department has collaborated with various professionals within their field, competed at the highest levels of the state and nation, and provided enriching experiences through travel both nationally and internationally; all in an effort to launch our performers to the next level of their craft.  We are consistently competing and outperforming our peers at the state level and beyond in each of the areas of this department: band, orchestra, choir, theatre, and competitive theatrics (speech and One-Act).  The awards we have earned and the accomplishments our students have achieved are a testament to the dedication and hard work of the directors and students involved.

Kearney High School is fortunate to have outstanding support from parents, community members, businesses and Booster Club groups in all activities.  All of these stakeholders play an instrumental role in the overall success of our school district.  Our students, staff, administration, and school board appreciate your loyalty and support.  Take a look around, the facilities at KHS speak for the support we have received from our community.

We are confident that everyone attending our events will exhibit the level of sportsmanship, integrity and personal conduct necessary to make tonight enjoyable for all.  As a member of the Heartland Athletic Conference and the Nebraska School Activities Association, we fully embrace this philosophy at Kearney High School.  Again, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Kearney High School (The Home of the KHS Rowdies) and I hope that you enjoy tonight’s contests.

Go Bearcats!
